从属连词是最重要的从属标记：限定从属分句通常是由从属连词引导的；非限定分句和无动词分句也可以带有从属连词。
从属连词属于封闭性词类，就词的构成来说，分为简单从属连词（simple subordinator）、复杂从属连词（complex subordinator）、关联从属连词（correlative subordinator）和边际从属连词（marginal subordinator）。许多学生对前三种从属连词比较熟悉，但对边际从属连词不太了解。笔者这里对边际从属连词作一分析。
有一些结构本来不是连词，或者仅是随意结构，但实际上起着从属连词的作用，这种结构可以称作"边际从属连词"。边际从属连词可分为三类。
一、连词加副词或副词加连词，如even if，ever since，if only，just as，only if等。例如：
1．Even if we achieve great success in our work，we should not be conceited．
即使我们在工作中取得了巨大的成绩，也不应该自满。
2．He went down to the countryside in 1958 and has been working there ever since．
他自从一九五八年下农村以来一直在那里工作。
3．If only it clears up，we'll go．只要天一放晴，我们就去。
4．I knew his wife must be praying for him just as I was praying for James．
我知道他的妻子一定在为他祈祷，正像我为詹姆斯祈祷一样。
5．I'll come only if you promise me that you won't invite Henry．
除非你答应不邀请亨利，否则我不会来。
另外，一些瞬间副词directly，instantly， immediately等也可用作从属连词，其意思相当于as soon as，主要用于英国英语。例如：
1．Directly I uttered these words there was a dead silence．
我一说出这几句话，大家立刻沉默下来。
2．My sister came immediately she got my message．
我姐姐一接到我的口信就来了。
3．I recognized her instantly I saw her．
我一看见她就把她认出来了。
二、作时间状语的名词短语，一般有以下两种：
1．the＋表示时间的名词
Telephone me the（very）moment you get the results．
（the moment ＝as soon as，但比它的语气强）你一得到结果就立刻给我打电话。
He disappeared the day she arrived．
（the day ＝on the day when．．．）她来到的当天他就不见了。
The instant the militiamen heard the alarm，they fell in for action．
民兵们一听到警报，就立即集合准备战斗。
2．不定代词＋time
You may come here any time you want to．你什么时候想来都可以来。
Each time I traveled by boat，I got seasick．我每次乘船都晕船。
三、有些介词词组也可以引导从句，起从属连词的作用，表示时间、原因或让步关系。例如：
1．During the time he stayed at our school，he usually helped our lessons．
他在我们学校的时候，总是帮助我们学习功课。（表时间）
2．For all you say，he sticks to his original decision．
不管你说什么，他还是坚持他原来的决定。（表让步）
3．I can't go now on account（of）I have to look after my baby brother．
我现在不能去，因为我得照看小弟弟。（表原因）
4．In the event（that）she has not been informed，I will tell her．
如果她还不知道，我会告诉她的。
5．In the light of the fact that great changes have taken place，we must revise our plan．
考虑到所发生的巨大变化，我们必须修改我们的计划。
