英语名词有单数和复数之分。单数表示一个人或事物；复数表示多于一个的人或事物。
但也有一些名词复数在使用时载有特殊意义。具体如下：
一、表示时间的名词复数在不与数词连用的情况下，表示"多"，常译为"几"，"多……"，"数……"等。例如：
The disease has been killing thousands of children for centuries．几个世纪以来，数以千计的儿童死于这一疾博
I haven't seen him for months．我已数月没见过他了。
二、表示人名的名词复数与the连用表示"夫妇"或"一家人"。例如：
The Curies had also succeeded in isolating a second rayshooting element-polonium．居里夫妇也成功地分离出第二个放射性元素---钋。
Among those present are his neighbours： the Hendersons，the Weiss's and the Harlowes．来客中有他的邻居：亨德森一家，韦斯一家，还有哈洛一家。
三、表示"20-90"间的整十数的复数与 the连用，表示"几十年代"。例如：
This was not during the Depression；this was in the late sixties and early seventies．这并不是发生在经济大萧条时期的事，而是发生在六十年代末七十年代初。
At the time I was nineteen，had long untidy hair，and regarded myself as part of the sixties'"youth counterculture"．当时我年方十九，留一头蓬乱的头发，自以为是六十年代"青年反主流文化"的一员。
四、表示"20-90"之间的整十数的复数与one's连用，表示"……多岁"。例如：
George Burns，an American comedian，is now in his nineties．美国喜剧作家乔治.彭斯现在九十多岁了。
He became a famous lawyer when he was in his thirties．他在三十多岁时成了一名著名的律师。
五、有些名词的复数形式有两种或两种以上的词义，在翻译时应根据上下文作出正确的理解，不可一概译为单数词义。例如：
Mind your manners at the party．宴会时要注意礼貌。
He knows a lot about Victorian manners．他很了解维多利亚时代的风俗。
She dropped and broke two glasses．她摔碎了两个玻璃杯。
I need glasses when I read．我阅读的时候需要眼镜。
Do you believe in spirits？你相信灵魂吗？
Your friendly letter raised my spirits．你亲切的来信使我精神为之一振。
