27 As it had not rained for several months, there was a ____ of water.
28 The car won't start because the battery was ____. A)run up B) run over C) run down D) run into
29 The boy, wanting to be independent, ____his father's offer to help. A) turned down B) turned on C) turned off D) turned up 本句中虽然没有表示因果关系的关联词如because, as, for, since等,但句中的现在分词短语wanting to be independent却含蓄地表示出原因:"想自立",因此,"拒绝父亲提供的帮助",答案为A)。
30 Jim is not ____, but he did badly in the final exams last term.
31 They ____ in spite of extremely difficult conditions. A) carried in B) carried off C) carried on D) carried forward 本题由in spite of引出的内容表示"尽管条件极为困难",前面的内容表示"他们仍继续下去",句中通过in spite of体现了转折关系。
32 You can't afford to let the situation get worse. You must take ____ to put it right. A) decisions B) directions C) sides D) steps 答案是D)。
33 The rain was heavy and ____ the land was flooded.
